Prepare for an evening where space, time, and imagination are pushed to their limits. Astrophysicist Dr Christopher Berry, a leading expert in gravitational waves, will unravel the mysteries of the universe’s most powerful and enigmatic objects: black holes.
In this captivating talk, Dr Berry will guide us into the heart of cosmic darkness — where stars collapse, spacetime twists, and gravity becomes so intense that not even light can escape. You’ll discover what black holes really are, how they form, and the astonishing ways they shape the cosmos around them.
Then, the story widens to one of the greatest scientific breakthroughs of our generation: gravitational wave astronomy. Dr Berry will reveal how scientists learned to “listen” to the universe itself, detecting the ripples from colossal cosmic collisions billions of light-years away. These faint whispers of spacetime have opened an entirely new window on the universe — one that is rewriting physics and revealing events previously hidden from view.
Expect vivid explanations, awe-inspiring visuals, and tales from the cutting edge of discovery as Dr Berry shows how gravitational waves have transformed our understanding of black holes and the violent universe.
If you’ve ever wondered what happens at the edge of physics — or what the universe sounds like when black holes collide — this is a night you simply cannot miss
