Over 37 years legendary mountaineer Stephen Venables has returned 11 times to the wild, sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia, a place as rich in history as it is brutal in climate. His first expedition in 1989 aboard HMS Endurance made several bold first ascents. In 2000 he joined Conrad Anker and Reinhold Messner to retrace Shackleton’s epic crossing for the IMAX film Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure. Journey through South Georgia’s dramatic past, from Captain Cook’s first landing 250 years ago to the scars left by sealing, whaling, and invasive species. Today the island is once again a wildlife sanctuary.
