La Bohème by Puccini is an opera sung here in English with full orchestra under the musical direction of Derek Clark. This is a new production by Eleanor Felton, set in modern times.
The plot follows four impoverished students, Rodolpho, Marcello, Colline, and Schaunard, who have just moved into a dilapidated apartment in Paris. The four men have substantial talent but no money. It is Xmas eve, and it is freezing. Three of them decide to celebrate by going to Café Momus but Rodolpho stays behind to finish a poem. Disturbed by a knock on the door, he meets Mimi, a pretty but fragile girl who lives upstairs. Mutually attracted, he persuades her to come with him to celebrate together with his friends. Outside the street is buzzing with street vendors and crowds waiting for a march to begin when feisty Musetta, Marcellos’ previous lover enters the café with an old rich admirer. Marcello is furious but Musetta tricks the admirer into giving her some time alone with Marcello and the pair leave together. Time passes but Mimi’s health deteriorates, living with Rudolpho in a cold garret isn’t good for her health and the couple separate. In the last Act Rodolpho is told that Mimi is dying and rushes to her bedside.
Although tragic, the opera is recognised as one of Puccini’s best and with well-known arias such as “My name is Mimi” and “Your tiny hand is frozen“, we would suggest this show is not to be missed.
