The beauty of the cosmos has enchanted humanity for millennia, but in our journey of trying to understand what we can see, we have to take into account the influence of those dark things which we cannot see. Dark matter and black holes lurk throughout every galaxy — including our own — and the universe as we know it would be drastically different if it weren't for these mysterious components. I will speak about the roles that dark matter and black holes have in the evolution of galaxies in the universe, and explain how scientists go about observing the unobservable.
