Friday 30 June, 11am-7pm
Drop-in and weave! Learn some simple willow wattling techniques and help to build a new sensory garden space. Practise traditional and contemporary building skills alongside master weaver and sculptor, Geoff Forrest.
Wattle weaving is an ancient construction technique, using locally sourced materials to create edges and borders which are durable, sustainable and semi-permeable. This is a drop in event, join us all day or for a part of it. Materials and refreshments provided.
A Weaving Together is organised as part of the creation of The Sentient Garden, a multisensory microcosm within the wider garden environment at Forgan Arts Centre.
What to bring:
The weaving will take place outside, so participants should wear sturdy footwear and prepare for the weather. Otherwise all materials will be provided. Hot drinks, cold drinks and snacks provided; you may like to bring a picnic lunch. The event will be relaxed, accessible to wheelchair users and there will be seating available. You can drop in at any time and stay as long as you like.
About Geoff Forrest:
Geoff’s art teacher wanted him to take art but instead he took the sensible path and ended up studying history. The ‘sensible’ path lead to employment in outdoor education and archaeology before returning to study for a diploma in occupational therapy. While working in the NHS he met and worked with the artist and psychotherapist Kavi Vadamootoo who introduced him to the power of art and the importance of creativity. In 1997 Geoff and his family moved to Scotland where he decided to work full time as a willow weaver. Since then a variety of commissions and work with other artists has lead him to explore other materials and how they can be used sculpturally.
About The Sentient Garden
The Sentient Garden is the creation of a new sensory space at Forgan Arts Centre, led by artist and writer Rowan Lear. Reversing the traditional sensory garden which tends to revolve around human senses, The Sentient Garden is inspired by all the ways that plants are feeling, responding, learning, remembering and altering their surroundings. The project aims to reimagine the garden as a multisensory and sentient ecology where plants, people and other creatures dwell together.
