Public broadcasting in Scotland was launched by the BBC on 6 March 1923. The station was located in Glasgow. From the small crowded studio news, talks, sport, religious services, music and entertainment were sent into the nation’s homes. The service quickly expanded to include the new stations based in Aberdeen, Dundee and Edinburgh. Over the next 100 years there were many developments and changes as broadcasting culture and media adapted to the changing needs, new technology and Scotland’s place in the UK.
The Museum of Communication's 2023 exhibition features famous Scottish radio and TV programmes illustrated by items from our collection- crystal set radios, valve wirelesses, radios and TVs. Interesting displays recalling moments in broadcasting history and events of the day. We also have a walk -in demonstration of TV special effects. The last part of the display will illustrate how broadcasting has evolved into an art form now in today’s world of ‘black-box’ digital streaming and smart phones. Something for all - all ages and requires no technical training! It is free to come in !!!
