Calm water doesn’t simply produce a mirror image of the land. Even on the most still of days, a breeze will be present somewhere that produces subtle changes that can have a dramatic effect.
Understanding how light direction, colour and perspective effects the peaks and troughs in the surface can be used to our artistic advantage, to make water appear convincing in a painting. Overworking with too many layers can deaden the effect too, while a little planning and knowledge of techniques can make all the difference.
