Patrick wrote his graduate thesis on the culture and philosophy of Jazz, however his real education began with post graduate studies behind the counter at Soho’s Reckless Records! Back in those halcyon days of record shops, there was no better way to network. Working alongside Kiss FM co-founder Jonathan More (Coldcut/ Ninja Tune), Patrick landed a show on the station, the hottest pirate radio in London back then.
His show for Kiss FM, “The Cosmic Jam” ran for 21 years, during which time Patrick was able to establish himself as a major force on the jazzier side of the tracks, mainly by becoming Gilles Peterson’s deck partner through such classic clubs as Talkin’ Loud and Sayin’ Something at Dingwalls and Talkin’ Loud at The Fridge. However never wanting to be pigeon holed as a Jazz DJ, Patrick has always maintained an eclectic outlook, and has cropped up playing Drum and Bass for Movement and soulful house for Garage City. In the late nineties Patrick established a residency alongside West London legend Phil Asher (R.I.P.). Inspiration Information at Notting Hill Arts Club focussed on Boogie and Disco, but was also one of the first clubs to support and play the new sound of Broken Beat.
From radio and club DJing it was a natural progression for Patrick to move into compiling and production. His work with Island Records, the Rebirth Of Cool series became an international success as it catalogued the growing relationship between Jazz and dance music as it progressed through hip-hop, breakbeat and drum and bass. Patrick has also released compilations through other labels covering such diverse areas as Chill-out electronica and Brazilian funk. On the production side Patrick has worked alongside multi-instrumentalist/songwriter/producer Christian Franck as Da Lata since the early nineties, releasing a clutch of albums and twelve inches. Although Patrick is less hands on these days, Patrick and Chris continue to break new ground with their label Da Lata Music releasing music from their extended musical family.
Patrick can still be heard on the radio with his monthly show for NTS, and at his bi- monthly residency at The House Of St. Barnabas, as well as being a regular selector at Spiritland, and of course his epic closing sets in the Love Dancin’ tent at We Out Here.
