Hank Tree, are set to unleash their stunning debut album, The Big North, on Olive Grove Records on 18th November 2022.
Drawing influences from Bill Callahan, The Velvet Underground and Elliott Smith, Hank Tree is a project led by Fergus MacDonald, formerly of Olive Grove stablemates, State Broadcasters, accompanied by Roy Shearer (Ultras, Inspector Tapehead) and Bart Owl (eagleowl, Broken Chanter).
Having supported artists including King Creosote, Alasdair Roberts and Gwenifer Raymond, the trio have built up a cult fan base across Scotland and in South America, thanks to Chilean singer-songwriter Diego Lorenzini, who released Hank Tree's debut EP, on his Uva Robot label.
Taking his inspiration from his time living in Chile, the songs on The Big North are influenced by MacDonald's visits to the ghost towns of the Atacama Desert, which give an account of the area's social and political history by creating representations of what life was like for the people who lived there. The songs on the album are informed by first-hand accounts of life in the towns and academic studies of the period, lyrically they explore themes like migration, human impacts on natural landscapes, technological progress and the building of relationships and communities in isolated and inhospitable places.
Musically the songs combine fragile and loud elements and blur the boundaries between indie, post-rock and folk. Picked classical guitar dominates but is surrounded by layers of distortion, loops, percussion and field recordings.
The release of the album will be preceded by the single Haber-Bosch Process, a song about unintended consequences of scientific discovery that's driven by crunching distorted guitar and krautrock inspired drums. The song features backing vocals from singer-songwriter and OK Pal Records founder Faith Eliott.
