The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) Scottish Game Fair (SGF) is set to heat up Perth’s food and drink scene this July (5-7) with an array of gourmet dishes and celebrity chef performances at Scone Palace, spotlighting a new buzzword – Weganism, veganism with a game twist.
This renowned industry event will be shining a light on the benefits of wild-harvested meats, including the sustainability and conservation involved in the sourcing, the nutrition gained from lean game meat choices, and the incredible flavour released. In addition to spotlighting Weganism, pro Forager and Fermentation Expert, Amy Rankine, will be encouraging attendees to go out into the picturesque Scottish countryside and source their own produce.
Passionate about the industry that makes Scotland so special, the very best food and drink will be showcased throughout the weekend. Visitors can book themselves a table at Nick Nairn’s on-site restaurant, indulge in a variety of cuisines at the Food Hall or learn all about cooking techniques, get inspired by new recipes and try game meat for the first time in the renowned Kitchen Theatre.
Perthshire Game will be supplying the meat for the Kitchen Theatre throughout the weekend and there will be local suppliers galore exhibiting samples of the finest produce, available to purchase throughout the event.
Well known chefs and cookery experts, including MasterChef 2022 Finalist, Sarah Rankin; Head Chef at The Gleneagles Hotel, Stavros Bampatsikos; Chef and Hotelier at Mhor, Tom Lewis, and Chef Restaurateur Harris McNeill and Kevin Dalgleish, who has recently taken part in Great British Menu will be heating up the Kitchen Theatre, showing a variety of Scottish produce and how to get the best from wild game through innovative recipe demonstrations. Kevin Dalgleish will be showcasing his dish from the show, Row Catherine Roe, giving visitors a taste of this delectable dish, alongside sharing his experience from the show. Open-fire and game cooking enthusiast Keith Greig (@keithcooks_ on Instagram) and Chef at the Fodderation Lucy Pattinson will also share their expertise, and pro Forager and Fermentation Expert, Amy Rankine, will educate attendees on wild produce and how vegetables, fruits and herbs can be utilised and fermented in the ‘kitchen’. Daniela Forbes of The Cook Academy will be hosting kid’s cookery demonstrations on Sunday 7 July, offering tips and advice on getting children into cooking and tasting game.
There will be terrific tipples and summer cocktails in the Beer Garden and exhibitors including Gin Bothy, Fraiser Liqueur, Tay Spirits, Reapers Run and Highland Moon in the Food Village will be showcasing the latest refreshments.
The Great Taste Market is returning to SGF this year, showcasing a carefully curated selection of Great Taste award-winning products, and the producers behind them. Great Taste is the world’s largest food and drink accreditation scheme where every product is judged on taste alone, and the market offers a unique opportunity for food enthusiasts to experience some of the best tasting products. From sumptuous savoury foods and exquisite confectioneries to impressive drinks, the market promises an extraordinary, flavour-filled experience for visitors.
Celebrity Chef Nick Nairn, who will be headlining the SGF, is eager to meet foodies who share his passion for specially crafted culinary delights. He explained: “The Scottish Game Fair is a key calendar moment for our industry and it’s a pleasure to be returning for the third year. I take joy in sharing my exciting new menus, crafted with game meat at the core, to encourage attendees to try something new and feel inspired when they leave the restaurant.”
David Gibson, Country Manager at Stable Events who organises the SGF, is excited to see how the chefs will be heating up the kitchen theatre this year. He said: “We have a stellar roster of chefs attending our event this summer and we can’t wait to see what magnificent dishes they come up with. Weganism is a growing trend and we’re hoping that the chefs can bust any game meat taboos and give attendees the confidence to expand their food choices.”
In addition to the gourmet game offering and plenty dining options, attendees can enjoy an array of activities, from fly fishing to falconry, clay shooting to fermentation workshops, working dogs to wild food.
The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust Scottish Game Fair is renowned for its expansive selection of exhibitors, seeing over 450 artisans, independents and specialists pitch up, alongside hundreds of activities, shows and entertainment, making it an unmissable weekend and an important calendar event for the sector.
