Scottish pianist, composer and arranger Euan Stevenson returns to East Neuk Festival next month (Sunday 29th June) for an afternoon performance of jazz classics by Duke Ellington, Bill Evans, Errol Garner, Oscar Peterson, George Shearing and other firm favourites.
The Euan Stevenson Trio is one of the most joyous swing trios on the UK Jazz scene today. Joining Euan on stage at Anstruther Town Hall will be celebrated double bass player Andy Sharkey (Ugly Bug Ragtime/Seonaid Aitken/RSNO), and drummer Tom Gordon (BBC Big Band/Lalo Schiffrin/NDR Big Band). Together, they will bring their own distinctive style and Euan’s pianistic flair to classics and new discoveries alike, shedding light on the styles and techniques of some of the world’s jazz piano icons.
Originally from Falkirk, Euan Stevenson has performed previously at East Neuk Festival in 2014, and has an ever growing following of jazz fans in Scotland. Elsewhere, he is very much in demand having accompanied and written for leading UK jazz musicians and vocalists, including David Newton (Newton/Stevenson Piano Duo), Jim Mullen, Tommy Smith (SNJO), Konrad Wiszniewski (New Focus Duo), Colin Steele, Georgia Cécile (pianist/co-writer/arranger), Anita Wardell and Tina May. In addition, from the USA, he has worked with Grammy award-nominated vocalist Carla Cook, acclaimed vocal trio ‘Duchess’ and the tap dancer Andrew Nemr.
Pianist Euan Stevenson said:
“I am delighted to be returning to East Neuk Festival next month. It’s been a while since I played at the festival, so to return for the 20th promises to be a very special concert for us. I particularly enjoy playing tunes that are familiar with audiences and sensing their recognition of some of the classics. Duke Ellington is one of my heroes and it’s amazing to think that his music has been popular for over a hundred years, and yet there’s always something new to discover in it and share with listeners.”
East Neuk Festival Director, Svend McEwan-Brown said: “I love that you can hear everything from ancient Scottish lute music to the very latest work of such fantastic artists in Anstruther over one long weekend. It is great to welcome Euan Stevenson back to ENF doing what he does so excellently – re-inventing the jazz greats with his superb trio.”
Also in Anstruther for ENF’s weekend of jazz, trad and world music will be legendary folk artist Kathryn Tickellwith her band The Darkening playing tunes from her new album Return to Kielderside released in November last year; rising star on the London jazz scene Tom Smith and his septet who will play a bluesy set of tunes from his debut album A Year in the Life released earlier this year; and Palestinian master of the Oud, Nizar Rohana playing material from his new jazz-traditional fusion album, Safa
During the festival music fans can also enjoy an outstanding classical programme of music including all five of Beethoven’s late quartets performed by four of the world’s finest: Elias Quartet, The Pavel Haas Quartet, Castalian Quartet and the Belcea Quartet; the return of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra with Principal Guest Conductor Andrew Manze; all three of Schubert’s song cycles performed by tenor Mark Padmore and baritone James Newby, and pianist Joseph Middleton; and a trio of concerts by guitarist, Sean Shibe who will also take the solo in the most famous guitar concerto: Concierto de Aranjuez.
To close the 20th festival, there will be the world premiere of Field of Stars by Sally Beamish performed by all four quartets and inspired partly by pilgrimage, and the Santiago de Compostela or ‘Field of Stars’ – the destination for pilgrims over the ages.
The East Neuk Festival runs from Wednesday, 25th to Sunday, 29th June and celebrates the joy and power of live music and its potential to transform lives and life. In the past 20 years the festival has presented over 420 events and welcomed well over 3,000 performers and 200,000 people to some of the most unique and intimate venues in the East Neuk of Fife.
