Matt Morrison, whisky specialist and bartender at the prestigious Bertie’s Whisky Bar at the Fife Arms, won first place in Nc’nean’s 2023 cocktail competition, giving him the opportunity to release his very own whisky in collaboration with the pioneering west coast distillery.
Matt, who’s been making delicious drinks at the stunningly renovated boutique hotel in Braemar for just shy of three years now, took first place at Nc’nean’s annual industry cocktail competition last year. His wildly innovative approach and deep understanding of his ingredients (including foraged Penny Bun mushrooms) led him to win the contest judged on taste, sustainability and hospitality. First place has won him the opportunity to handpick his very own cask of whisky from leading organic distillery Nc’nean.
A tiny release of only 288 bottles of the creamy, buttery ex-Bourbon cask single malt have been created, of which only 272 will be available for purchase through Nc’nean’s website on Burns night (25th January 2024). Made in Nc’nean’s 100% renewable energy powered distillery and bottled in 100% recycled glass, the remaining bottles of this rare single cask will be available to try at Matt’s working residence, The Fife Arms.
The single cask was filled in 2017, during Nc’nean’s first year of distilling, making it one of the oldest whiskies they’ve released to date. Matt finds he can taste notes of spiced banana bread, lemon balm and vanilla ice cream in his single cask bottling.
The delicious bottling brings together two of Scotland’s leading independent businesses, Nc’nean and The Fife Arms. Businesses who both take a modern approach to bringing Scotland’s traditions to life.
Excited to bring this new experimental release to consumers across Scotland, Matt Morrison, Bartender at The Fife Arms said:
"I’m really excited for people to try this single cask from Nc’nean. Coming from Nc’nean means it’s very quaffable on the palate and guilt free on the mind. I’ve selected this cask because the flavours of banana bread and vanilla ice cream are amongst my favourite in whisky and the additional hint of spice this whisky presents leads to a fantastic and unique drinking experience.”
Matt Hastings, Blender at Nc’nean and judge of their annual cocktail competition, added:
"It’s been a delight getting to know Matt, both from the cocktail competition and in guiding him through the cask selection process for this release. His phenomenal attention to detail has been apparent throughout, resulting in him finding a unique and particularly decadent whisky, packed full of the very best qualities Nc’nean has to offer.”
Aon 17-193 has flavours of spiced banana bread, lemon balm and vanilla ice cream, and will be available to buy for £94.95 from ncnean.com (who offer UK-wide shipping) from Burns Night (25th of January).
