Hazel Powell and Giacomo Pesce will run a soft opening of Baern just in time for the first Bowhouse Market Weekend of the year on 12th and 13th March, before it opens fully on 24 March. Located in the striking café and courtyard area of Bowhouse, they will offer hyper seasonal, producer-led, locally sourced food and homemade drinks. The ever-changing menu will be directly influenced by the producers within the Bowhouse, as well as the surrounding area, showcasing the incredible produce the region has to offer.
Baern’s seasonal menu for the March Market Weekend is part of a line-up of carefully selected food producers and street food traders from Fife and beyond. The monthly Market Weekends at Bowhouse are free to attend, giving visitors the opportunity to meet, discuss and taste food and drink from Scotland’s best artisan producers.
The spring Bowhouse Market Weekend dates comprise:
Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th March,
Saturday 9th & Sunday 10th April,
Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th May.
The March Market Weekend will have a New Beginnings theme, with charity partner Footprint East Neuk, hosting a tree planting workshop. A seed planting activity for children will also take place, hosted by growers, Connie and Tom Hunter of East Neuk Market Garden.
The following month, on the 9th and 10th of April, the Market Weekend will have a baking and sweet treats theme. Craft makers will be in attendance selling a variety of handmade homewares and gifts as well as a Bake-Off competition hosted by the Bowhouse team. Easter activities will include children’s baking with the Anstruther Improvements Association and a chocolate tasting event will take place.
Taking place on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th May, the May Market Weekend will celebrate butchery and sustainable meat. Visitors will be able to learn about the very best meat from field to fork with demonstrations from local meat producers. The partner charity at this market will be the St Monans Community Trust, which will be hosting children’s activities.
From 24th March, Baern will be offer a menu that will be based around sourdough bread, sweet and savoury pastry and a plated brunch/lunch menu. An evening menu will run in the future for special events and will focus on a more refined small plate offering. The new café will also offer a deli selection to take away with homemade soft drinks. Pop up suppers and visits from guest chefs also form a part in the future plans, with the upstairs area ideally suited to hands-on food workshops and group activities. Baern’s events will introduce the community to some of the diverse network of chefs, producers, and suppliers who are helping to shape Scotland’s food landscape.
Baern joins a growing number of producers based permanently at Bowhouse:
• Butchery at Bowhouse, which sells a range of grass-fed, organic Balcaskie Estate beef, lamb and mutton, alongside other local game and pork. Open Thursdays to Saturdays.
• Scotland the Bread, a recent recipient of a BBC Food & Farming Award, this innovative mill produces wholemeal organic flours and grains grown on Balcaskie Estate.
• East Neuk Market Garden, pesticide-free, seasonal vegetables grown just behind Bowhouse and beloved by chefs and locals alike.
• Futtle Organic Brewery: rums, ciders, beers and an impressive selection of natural wines are all available to take away or enjoy in the tap room. The Futtle taproom, bottle shop and record store is open Thursdays to Sundays, 12-6pm.
• Grain & Sustain: sustainable store cupboard supplies, foods and homewares from this zero-waste shop.
• Keeping the Plot, which grows and sells stunning fresh flowers and bouquets.
Based on the Balcaskie Estate in the East Neuk of Fife, Bowhouse opened as a makers hub for local food and drink producers in summer 2017, working to provide the missing link between farm and fork for producer and consumer. Its Market Weekends continue to attract thousands of visitors through the doors each month. The number of producers has continuously grown and now seven independent food businesses are permanently based at the venue.
Bowhouse Market Weekends take place on Saturday and Sunday of the second weekend of each month.
Those shopping for local food and drink can also make use of the Bowhouse Link, a weekly online market, which enables customers to continue shopping from local makers for pick up at Bowhouse or local delivery. Customers can shop Monday to Wednesday from a range of selected producers. Orders are then packed for delivery or can be picked up at Bowhouse on the Saturday and Sunday. Visitors to the Market Weekends can use the Bowhouse Link service to pre-order before browsing the market stalls.
Based on Balcaskie Estate, Bowhouse opened in 2017 to provide the missing link between farm and fork, with a mission to connect maker with consumer.
