The Rural Art Exhibition was first created for the Rural Poverty Conference, held in October 2025 during Challenge Poverty Week. The theme of the conference was the Rural Premium – the extra and often unfair costs people face simply because they live in a rural area.
During 2025, three groups took part in art sessions funded and supported by Fife Council’s Community Learning and Development (CLD) service. These groups included members of the Rural Voice Panel, Crail Community Larder and NEF Youth Voice. Their artwork shares real experiences of rural life, the challenges they face and what they would like to see change.
The exhibition is visiting seven venues across NE Fife. Each session runs for two hours, and people can drop in at any time. At least one group involved in the project will be there at each event to speak with visitors and answer questions.
Exhibition dates and venues:
22 January, 12–2pm – Tayside Institute Community Centre, Newburgh
27 January, 10am–12pm – Colinsburgh Town Hall
28 January, 11am–1pm – St Andrews Community Hospital
24 February, 10am–12pm – Adamson Hospital, Cupar
2 March, 10.30am–12.30pm – Balcomie Links Hotel, Crail
11 March, 10am–12pm – Dolphin Centre, Tayport
The exhibition also gives local people a chance to share their own experiences. Feedback gathered will help shape the new Rural Poverty Plan, due to start in April. The plan is being developed using input from the Rural Poverty Conference, the Rural Voice Panel and the Rural Poverty Action Group.
Kirstie Freeman, Community Manager for NE Fife, said: “The Rural Art Exhibition is a powerful way of bringing people’s lived experiences to the forefront. Many people in rural areas face higher costs simply because of where they live, and this project gives them a platform to share that reality in their own words and through their own creativity. We hope the exhibition encourages more people to come forward, tell us what matters to them, and help shape the next Rural Poverty Plan for North East Fife.”
