Conservation charity the National Trust for Scotland has confirmed that its castles, palaces and grand houses across Fife will reopen for visitors this month, in line with the easing of lockdown rules. Falkland Palace will reopen on Thursday 27 May, followed by Kellie Castle on Friday 28 May and Hill of Tarvit on Saturday 12 June, with many hidden tales and treasures throughout the collections for visitors to discover.
Falkland Palace, once the county residence of the royal Stuarts, and adored by Mary Queen of Scots, boasts spectacular Renaissance architecture and is home to one of Britain’s oldest tennis courts. Visitors can learn about all the conservation work throughout the palace, including centuries-old carvings, paintings and furniture.
Falkland Palace is open from 27 May - 31 October, alongside the garden and shop which are all operating on the same opening hours from 11am-5pm, Wednesday to Sunday.
Medieval atmosphere meets Victorian style at the striking Kellie Castle, where some of the oldest parts date back to the 14th century. The stables at Kellie Castle are currently home to an exhibition on sculptor Hew Lorimer’s life, and visitors are encouraged to explore the Arts & Crafts garden, where herbaceous borders are filled with roses, along with fruit and vegetables which are all grown organically.
Kellie Castle is open from 28 May - 31 October 1pm -5pm, Friday to Sunday.
Fife’s Edwardian mansion, Hill of Tarvit, will be welcoming visitors to discover its hidden secrets and amazing collection of fine art and porcelain. Visitors can also partake in a round of golf on the only dedicated hickory golf course in the UK, which will reopen on this bank holiday weekend.
Hill of Tarvit is open from 12 June - 31 October 11am-5pm Saturdays and Sundays.
Wendy Purvis, Operations Manager for Fife said: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming visitors back to the places that they love. We’re very grateful to be in the position to reopen and share our treasures from our extensive collection again, thanks to the support of many, including our local communities.
“Everyone at our properties across Fife have been preparing to make your visit as safe as possible. Pre-booking is in place at all sites. We’d highly recommend booking your slot in advance to avoid any disappointment.”
The Trust is urging anyone planning to visit to check the latest opening information on www.nts.org.uk before travelling, as some properties have different opening patterns this summer.
The website also contains information for visitors on the safety measure that will be in place for visits - www.nts.org.uk/stories/what-to-expect-when-visiting-our-places
