Nature has always been a great source of inspiration for many artists and designers. Looking deeply into nature unlocks the imagination and inspires creativity. During this period of isolation however, nature’s importance has been elevated. For some people, it has been a rediscovery of the outdoors, which has led to a better understanding of the natural world and their immediate environment, but for others, it has been much more. For many it has been a lifeline, where they have sought comfort and consolation in a time of uncertainty.
Contemporary artists Caroline McGonigal, Patricia Bray and jewellers Mary Farrell and Kate Trouw, all have strong connections within their artwork to the natural world. Harnessing nature to create drawings and paintings, inspiration from walking the land to create prints and paintings; the use of natural sources from our shores incorporated in jewellery, and jewellery inspired by lines, patterns and textures found in the sea and botanicals.
