After decades spent isolated in a psychiatric institution, this heartfelt documentary follows a group of people as they readjust to normality.
Scottish Premiere, Tomislav Zaja, Croatia, 2018, Croatian (English subtitles), 73m
Winner of the Feature Documentary award at SMHAF 2021
When a psychiatric institution in Croatia closes its doors for good, its patients get an opportunity to rebuild their lives after decades inside. First introduced by their diagnoses alone, we are gradually drawn into their individual and expanding worlds, as they rediscover their interests, their environments, and the power of human connection. This is an uplifting and subtly powerful film about what normality can mean to people who have been forgotten by society.
Neighbors has also won multiple international awards, including the Audience Award at ZagrebDox and Best Feature Documentary at Aesthetica Film Festival.
