A unique way of engaging with the natural world and learning new skills! Only very limited spaces are available for this special workshop. Book it now to experience the calming effect of working with natural wood.

This exciting craft day with Steve Bretel is aimed at adult beginners, but is also suitable for experienced people. It will give all participants the opportunity to make spoons, spatulas or other small utensils. You may even produce something unique that you are proud to give to someone special! Ideas will be suggested for making these not only functional, but decorative and artistic items, working with the form the wood has suggested, following the grain once cleaved taking account of the natural twists and turns.

This is both challenging and enjoyable, and a direct connection with the natural world around us. Using specialist tools such as a Scandinavian-made hook knife and straight blade carving knife, you will start with practicing the basics at your own pace, while gaining a thorough understanding of the safety and awareness needed when using them. You will then be working from ‘blanks’ - rough shapes cut for you with an axe and draw knife from fresh greenwood - and also be able to see how these are created.

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS: Please note that you will be using very sharp tools. From the start, you will be shown safe techniques to minimise the risk of any injury, and have lots of time to put these into practice. Even so, it needs to be understood that small nicks to fingers for example, can sometimes happen, even when experienced, so you will have the option of wearing protective gloves, which are yours to keep.

Once you have a practical understanding of the safety, skills and awareness required, you are then free to experience this highly immersive and enjoyable art form.

PLEASE NOTE: Refreshments are included, but you will need to bring a packed lunch, or purchase food in the cosy conservatory café.

DURATION: 10 am - 4 pm including lunch break

AGE: Minimum age 18
