About Pages of the Sea St Andrews

Filmmaker Danny Boyle invites you to join him in marking 100 years since Armistice. Pages of the Sea is a unique moment to say goodbye, together, to the millions of men and women who left their shores during the war, many never to return.

You’re invited to West Sands beach in St Andrews where, over the course of several hours, a large-scale sand portrait of a First World War casualty will emerge from the sand. And then, as the tide rises, watch as it’s washed away as we take a moment to say a collective goodbye.

National Theatre of Scotland leads the event at West Sands in partnership with Fife Council, Fife Cultural Trust and The Byre Theatre. In addition to the portrait, the public will be asked to join in by creating silhouettes of people in the sand, remembering the millions of lives lost or changed forever by the conflict. Please note the scale of the sand art is weather-dependant.

Carol Ann Duffy has written a poem especially for the moment, to be read by individuals, families and communities on the day. Search ‘Pages of the Sea St Andrews workshop’ to learn more about the open workshop ahead of the event.

While we take every opportunity to ensure the details for Pages of the Sea St Andrews are accurate, we always advise that you contact the event organiser before setting out for the event to avoid disapointment.
